Rocks • Minerals • Crystals • Fossils

Geology is the scientific study of the Earth, including its composition, structure, processes, and history and include the study of identification and classification of rocks, minerals, and fossils, of interest to the rock hound.
Types of Rocks:
- Igneous rocks: Formed from the cooling and solidification of molten rock (e.g., granite, basalt).
- Sedimentary rocks: Formed from the accumulation and lithification of material like sand, mud, or plant and animal debris (e.g., limestone, sandstone).
- Metamorphic rocks: Formed when existing rocks are subjected to high pressure, temperature, or chemical processes (e.g., marble, schist).

Rock and Fossil Identification
SUU’s Department of Geosciences offers a Rock and Fossil Identification service.
Individuals who have found a rock or fossil specimen and are interested in more information can fill out a form with details about the specimen, its original location, and a photo attachment.
This service is part of SUU’s commitment to community engagement and education in the geosciences.
